You Can Do It piano concerto film orchestra - symphony for Japan competition scene

Project Overview

Project Name: Piano Concerto Film Orchestra for “You Can Do It!” (Lang Lang Biopic)

Project Type: Piano Concerto Film Orchestra | Film Music Production | International Musicians Coordination

Timeline: June-July 2024 (Two-stage production)

Location: Beijing

Director: Jiang Wen

Subject: Lang Lang’s biographical film

Orchestra size: 41/81 professional musicians

Introduction:
In 2024, Dengtai Artists undertook a highly challenging and meaningful project: providing piano concerto film orchestra services for legendary director Jiang Wen’s “You Can Do It!” (Lang Lang biopic). The film chronicles world-renowned pianist Lang Lang’s journey from a boy in Shenyang to an international superstar, featuring an ensemble cast including Jiang Wen, Ma Li, Ge You, Hu Ge, and Donnie Yen.
The production required orchestras for two critical scenes representing pivotal moments in Lang Lang’s career: the Tchaikovsky Competition in Japan and the 1999 Ravinia Festival performance that changed his life. These scenes demanded not only professional musical performance but also visual presentation of authentic international concert atmospheres.

🎬 Filming Scenes Explained

First Stage: Tchaikovsky Competition in Japan Scene

Filming Dates: June 6-7, 2024
Location: Beijing
Scene Context: Young Lang Lang competing in an international piano competition, a crucial step toward the world stage

This scene showcased Lang Lang’s brilliant performance at an international competition, requiring the orchestra to fully present the live concerto performance atmosphere. We assembled a 41-member symphony orchestra performing Chopin’s Second Piano Concerto and Tchaikovsky’s First Piano Concerto. This orchestra size met both the musical requirements of concerto performance and the visual needs of the competition scene.

Second Stage: 1999 Ravinia Festival Breakthrough Moment

Filming Dates: July 17-18, 2024
Location: Beijing
Scene Context: The most important turning point in Lang Lang’s career—the legendary 1999 Ravinia Festival in Chicago

This scene recreated Lang Lang’s legendary breakthrough moment. In 1999 at the Ravinia Festival, 17-year-old Lang Lang stepped in at the last moment for an ailing André Watts and performed Tchaikovsky’s Piano Concerto No. 1 with the Chicago Symphony Orchestra, becoming famous overnight. This was Lang Lang’s transformation from an unknown conservatory student to an international star—the film’s climactic scene.

For this scene, we assembled an 81-member large symphony orchestra, fully presenting the scale and atmosphere of an international top-tier music festival. Each musician had to convey the power of that historic moment through the camera.

💼 Our Responsibilities and Challenges

Core Service Components

International Musicians Recruitment

The project’s greatest challenge was recruiting high-level professional musicians from around the world in a short timeframe. Through our international musician network built over years, we successfully recruited two differently-sized orchestra batches from 16 countries. Stage one: 41 members; stage two: 81 members—all possessing professional performance standards and extensive orchestra experience.

Cross-Border and Inter-Provincial Coordination

While most musicians came from within China, we still coordinated several artists who traveled specially from abroad. Domestic musicians were distributed across 14 different cities, from first-tier cities like Beijing, Shanghai, and Guangzhou to prefecture-level cities like Liupanshui and Zhangjiajie. Each musician required individual arrangements for transportation, accommodation, and scheduling. With only a month between the two filming sessions and some musicians participating in both stages, this demanded precise time management and personnel coordination capabilities.

Piano Soloist Collaboration

This project’s special feature was close collaboration with the piano soloist. While the pianist was hired separately by the production team (Lv Yinuo from Tianjin Juilliard School of Music), our orchestra needed to achieve perfect musical harmony with him during rehearsals and filming. Piano concertos demand extremely high coordination between orchestra and soloist—any imbalance in any section affects the overall effect.

Rapid Scale Switching

The transition from a 41-member to an 81-member orchestra wasn’t just about numbers—it involved comprehensive differences in sound structure, rehearsal methods, and on-set coordination. We needed separate plans for each formation, ensuring both filming sessions met the director’s artistic standards.

🎯 Project Execution Highlights

Precise Schedule Coordination

With over a month between filming sessions, many musicians participated in both stages. We needed to confirm each musician’s long-term schedule in advance, coordinate their travels between cities, and prepare contingency plans for possible filming delays. Ultimately, all musicians arrived on time with zero absences due to scheduling conflicts.

Live Performance Professionalism

All scenes employed actual live performance—not miming or lip-syncing. This placed extremely high demands on musicians’ professional standards—achieving recording-quality musical performance while appearing natural on camera. Every musician we recruited was a rigorously selected professional performer, ensuring both musical quality and visual effect of live performance.

Collaboration with Director Jiang Wen

Director Jiang Wen is renowned for his extreme attention to detail. During filming, our team communicated directly with the director, adjusting musicians’ positioning, movements, and expressions according to shot requirements. This close collaboration ensured each shot was perfect both musically and visually, matching the director’s artistic vision.

Efficient Quick Rehearsals

Rehearsals for both filming sessions occurred compactly just before formal shooting. We prepared scores in advance, quickly organized rehearsals after musicians’ arrival, and achieved required performance standards within limited time. This demanded every musician possess strong sight-reading abilities and orchestra collaboration experience.

📊 Project Results

Successfully Completed Two-Stage Filming

Both filming sessions concluded successfully as planned, with all musicians arriving on time and performance quality meeting director’s requirements. The film premiered July 18, 2025, with these two crucial musical scenes becoming visual and emotional climaxes.

Demonstrated Professional Piano Concerto Production Capability

Successfully coordinated collaboration between piano soloist and orchestra, presenting high-standard piano concerto performance scenes. This represented not only a musical challenge but professional demonstration of music production in film shooting.

Creatively Solved Scale-Related Challenges

The transition from 41 to 81 musicians showcased our organizational capabilities across different formations. Though differently sized, both orchestras achieved international festival professional standards.

Successful Collaboration with Top Film Team

Smooth cooperation with Director Jiang Wen and his production team earned high recognition from the crew. This experience also accumulated valuable experience collaborating with China’s top filmmakers.

💡 Professional Capabilities Demonstrated

Piano Concerto Specialized Experience

This project prominently demonstrated our professional capabilities in piano concerto filming. Unlike pure orchestral performance, concertos require handling the complex relationship between soloist and orchestra—volume balance, rhythm coordination, musical breathing. Our team understands these professional requirements and can assemble orchestra configurations perfectly matching piano soloists.

Large-Scale International Team Management

16 countries, 14 Chinese cities, two differently-sized orchestras—such complexity demands powerful organizational coordination capabilities. We needed to handle not only language and cultural differences but also unify performance styles from different musical tradition backgrounds, enabling musicians from around the world to develop rapport in a short time.

Film Music Production Understanding

Understanding differences between film shooting and concert performance—camera angles, lighting cooperation, multiple takes, expression management. Our musicians not only perform but also appear naturally on camera, accommodating director’s visual needs. This crossover professional understanding is core to film music production capability.

Jiang Wen Production Quality Standards

Director Jiang Wen’s extreme pursuit of quality is well-known in Chinese cinema. Meeting such standards means our services aren’t just technically adequate but artistically recognized. This collaboration proved Dengtai Artists’ competitiveness in high-end film projects.
